The Royal Navy course is delivered from within the Naval Staff in the Ministry of Defence.

The course is run annually by a Royal Naval officer at Commander rank.  The aim of the Royal Navy course is the give students the opportunity to learn about, and experience all aspects of, military life in the Royal Navy.

The course involves a varied package of visits to UK and overseas locations throughout the year.  The programme, subject to operational constraints, would typically include visits to the following:

  • Her Majesty’s Naval bases at Portsmouth, Devonport and Faslane

  • Royal Naval Air Stations at Yeovilton and Culdrose

  • An initial training establishment, Britannia Royal Naval College, HMS Raleigh and the Commando training centre

  • A Royal Marine unit

  • Flag Officer Sea Training including participation in the Thursday War

  • Navy Command Headquarters

  • Ships that are alongside – offshore patrol vessels, mine counter measures vessels, Type 23 frigates and Type 45 destroyers 

  • Short passage on a ship at sea

  • Joint Warrior training exercise

  • Royal Marines unit on exercise including cold weather training in Norway
